1. Pope Benedict Makes Final Public Appearance

Pope Benedict will make his final public appearance as pope in St. Peter's Square this morning. The city of Rome estimates more than 200,000 people will be in the audience.

2. One Dead in Auckland Shark Attack

One person has died following an apparent shark attack on Auckland's west coast, according to TV New Zealand. Eyewitnesses told the network they heard gun shots as police tried to free the victim from the shark's grip.

3. Shooting Puts S.C. University in Lockdown

Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina was on lockdown Tuesday night after a shooting at a residence hall near campus. One victim was transported to the hospital.

4. Bus Accident Involving 22 Athletes Leaves Driver Injured

An accident involving a charter bus carrying 22 athletes from the University of Maine women's basketball team occurred in Massachusetts Tuesday night. The bus driver sustained serious injuries but the injuries to the students were minor, according to police.

5. Coast Guard Calls Off Rescue for Boat Reported Capsized

After scouring 20,000 square miles of ocean for two days, the Coast Guard has called off a rescue mission for a sailboat reported capsized off the coast of California earlier this week. The Coast Guard did not call the incident a hoax but did note that making fake distress calls is a federal criminal offense.
