Brownfield Police responded to the 600 block of Main Street early Tuesday afternoon after reports of the shooting.
Police said Rosa and Jesus Contreraz were shot and killed by their own son-in-law early Tuesday afternoon. Family members of the victims surrounded the home when they heard the news, and said it was a tragedy that shocked everyone.
"I mean i knew he had a temper but i didn't think he was capable of doing what he did," said Ramona Contreraz, Jesus Contreraz' sister.
Ramona said the suspect, 42-year-old Jose DeLuna, had a history of violent behavior, which is what led to his separation with his wife Blanca. She said her brother, his wife, and daughter were trying to push him out of their lives.
"She put up with him for so many years until finally she left him. That's when she went to live with my brother."
Ramona said that's what led to DeLuna barging into the Contreraz' home Tuesday morning, demanding to see his estranged wife.
"He asked them where Blanca was and they didn't want to tell him. They told him that they didn't know. Then he pushed my brother and my brother pushed him again and told him to get out of his house and that's when he took the gun out and started shooting."
Those bullets took the live of her beloved brother and sister-in-law.
"All I know is that i wont be able to see my brother anymore. I got other brothers mija, don't get me wrong but I could talk to him about my problems, everything. He was there and now he's not going to be there for me."
Family and friends surrounded the home when they heard the news, struggling to cope with the tragedy.
"When you die from a sickness mija it's different. But when you die like that it's hard to accept. But I'm going to try for my brothers and my sisters and my kids."
Ramona did add that Blanca and her three daughters drove out of town before the tragedy happened and are safe.
Brownfield ISD schools were placed on lockdown while police searched for the suspect.
DPS troops said the suspect died in a crash in Plains after the shooting Tuesday and was airlifted to UMC.
