LUBBOCK, Texas - Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury and the Red Raiders will kickoff Big 12 play in front of a national television audience on a FOX Sports or ESPN platform on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Jones AT&T Stadium, giving Texas Tech its first Thursday night home game since 1994.
The announcement was made earlier today by the Big 12 Conference and gives Texas Tech its second date change to the 2013 schedule in as many days. On Wednesday, ESPN and the Big East announced that Tech's season opener at SMU would be moved to Friday, Aug. 30, in order to accommodate a national broadcast.
"We are excited to have our 2013 Big 12 season kickoff in front of a national television audience," Kirby Hocutt, Director of Athletics said. "The Big 12 conference television agreement requires that our league provide four Thursday night games and we look forward to this opportunity to showcase our great university and city to the entire nation."
Texas Tech and TCU were originally scheduled to play on Saturday, Sept. 14. The last appearance for Red Raider Football on a Thursday night came in 1994 when Tech suffered a 42-16 setback to then top-ranked Nebraska at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Three non-Saturday games will be on the docket this season for the Red Raiders, including the season opener at SMU (Friday, Aug. 30), TCU (Thursday, Sept. 12) and a rivalry game at Texas (Thursday, Nov. 28). The network that will carry the Texas Tech-TCU game will be announced at a later date.
