We have an update on the progress over at the Slaton animal shelter. Officials are pushing back the start date for the new adoption procedures. The city of Slaton decided to make the changes after receiving complaints it was too difficult to adopt from the shelter and too many animals were being euthanized. City officials decided to take action and put new policies in place.

Those policies were supposed to be unveiled Wednesday, but mayor, Laura Lynn Wilson says they need to wait another week because the job is bigger than first expected.

"We do hope that there are ways that our citizens in Slaton can step forward and help us through this project and assist in some of those projects and fostering is one of those ways that they'll be able to help us," says Wilson.

Other small shelters in the South Plains have faced similar problems. Levelland's mayor, Hugh Bradley says their shelter's success has come from individuals willing to foster dogs and find permanent homes for the animals.
