This spring break, the Department of Public Safety is cracking down on drunk drivers by putting extra officers on patrol.

Starting today through next week, it's all hands on deck for DPS troopers.

Many of them will work overtime to keep Lubbock roads safe from drunk drivers.

Corporal John Gonzalez says last spring break there were more than 1000 DWI arrests, much higher than a typical week.

Gonzalez said many underage kids and college students use this time to go out and get drunk with friends, and some end up making irresponsible decisions.

"Again, we'll be out there in full force," said Gonzalez.  "We'll be looking for any and all violations.  We're going to discourage the drinking.  Be responsible.  Make some wise choices.  If you do drink hand the keys over to somebody else."

Gonzalez hopes that when people see more troopers out on the road they'll think twice about drinking and driving.
