LUBBOCK, Texas - Shelby
Johnson matched the Texas Tech school record with five hits and drove
in six runs to lead the Red Raiders to a 12-4 victory over IPFW
Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
The
victory improved Tech (15-8) to 2-1 so far in the Jeannine McHaney
Memorial Classic entering the second game of the day against UMKC.
After
falling to the Mastodons (8-5) the day before, Johnson paced a Tech
offense that scored its most runs since plating 18 in the tournament
opener last weekend
against Jackson State. The Red Raiders scored in all six innings,
including four in the sixth to end the game via run-rule.
Johnson
went 5-for-5 with a double in the first and then four singles to match
the Tech school record for hits that was set by Stephanie Drewry on Feb.
27, 2009, against
South Florida. She drove in a season-high six runs, matching the most
for a Tech player this season.
Johnson
was one of four Red Raiders with at least two hits in the game, joining
Sandy James (2-for-4), Taylor Powell (2-for-3), and Samantha Camello
(2-for-4).
With
the wind blowing out to left, Tech scored all its runs without using
the long ball as Camello recorded three RBI, two of which were off a
two-run single in the
third, while James and Powell added an RBI of their own as well.
Cara
Custer (7-2) picked up the win after giving up four runs off six hits
and three walks. She also struck out four in her fifth complete game
already this year.
IPFW
scored two in the fourth off solo home runs from Ashleigh and Alex
Bousquet and then two more in the sixth off a Dani Pugh single to left
field.
Megan
Flenniken (1-2) took the loss for IPFW as she surrendered eight runs
off 11 hits and five walks while striking out two. Sara Lazarowich
pitched the sixth where
she allowed four runs off three hits.
