Brent Mackey was coming home from work Thursday morning when he noticed a random vehicle sitting in his driveway and a man inside his home.

"At the time adrenaline was going and didn't have a chance to be scared but once everything sort of settled down I was like wow," said Mackey.

Mackey immediately called police, but before officers could arrive the suspect took off leaving behind tire marks and valuables he planned to take.

"About the time he was pulling across my front yard the constable pulled up," Mackey said.  "I let him know my house had just been broken into and the constable took off after him."

Coincidentally, Constable Carroll Thomas happened to drive by when the suspect was running out the door.

"It's just luck is all it was," said Thomas.  "We chased him and it was probably about 100 mile an hour down Erskine.  The homeowner I'm just glad he wasn't hurt because he was standing there in the yard and telling the guy it wasn't his house."

Mackey, although shaken up, is grateful for Thomas' quick thinking.

"I was pretty mad the whole time," said Mackey.  "And after it was all over the constable had taken off and I was just standing here by myself I was just like that was crazy you know kind of scared me.  I'm really thankful that he did happen to come by at that time."

The suspect was able to elude police.

Officers found his parked car less than ten minutes later at Fulton and Erskine, but say the driver is still on the loose.
