It's only the third day of circulation for the alcohol sales petition and 'Let Lubbock Vote' organizers say they are already near their signature goal.

Petition organizers say they received 3,000 signatures in the first day alone.

They need nearly 20,000 signatures from registered voters in Lubbock County to get this issue on the May ballot.

Organizers are set up at Walmart, Sams Club and 7 Eleven stations around the city and they say by the end of next week, they should have more than enough signatures- they're hoping as many as 40,000.

Larry Jones from the Lubbock Area Baptist Association says he and his volunteers, who oppose alcohol sales in the city, are in this for the long run.

"The problem is profiteers, the profiteers are investing the money for themselves.  They're not interested in us, they're paying outsiders and employing people because they're interested in what they're going to profit out of it," Jones says.

Petition official, Brandon Woods, says he's surprised at how many people have signed the petition so quickly.

"I thought that maybe it might have been five out of ten people, but it seems like it's eight out of ten people and we're getting hundreds-wide a day," Woods says.

Petition organizers have until December to get the required number of signatures to place the issue on the ballot.
