LISD Schools Fail to Meet Federal Standards

Lubbock's Independent School District is speaking out after high schools failed to meet federal academic requirements. LISD administrators say failing rates for all four of their schools are due in large part to testing special education students on the grade level appropriate to their age, not their instruction level. Special Education Director Paul Wheeler says these scores are not indicative of LISD's quality of education.
"Under the federal government, for a large percentage of our students, they do not modify that test. So it's the same test that all students are taking under a normal grade level," says Wheeler.
Wheeler is helping special education teachers accelerate lesson plans to bring students up to their age-appropriate grade and get closer to meeting federal academic requirements.
