LISD Superintendent Retires

By: Allison Morrison
Updated: December 5, 2008

After 41 years in public education, Lubbock ISD Superintendent Wayne Havens announced his retirement Friday morning.

Havens has served as LISD Superintendent since the spring of 2003.

Prior to that, he served two stints as Interim Superintendent.

Havens started in the district as a teacher and coach in 1968.

He also served as Principal at both Hutchinson Junior High and Coronado High School.

Those who worked with Havens called his service to the district a blessing.

"When I first started and Wayne first started we were both coaches on the Junior High level and he did a great job there and then he moved into assistant principal and then principals and vice principals and every one of the jobs that he had he was very well respected," friend of Havens' and Assistant Principal at Hutchinson Jr. High, Tom Brown says.

Havens plans to stay with the district until a new superintendent is found.
