The days of driving to "The Strip" for beer, wine, and liquor could be numbered. On Monday, county officials announced Lubbock citizens will vote, next May, on whether they want packaged alcohol sales inside the city limits.

You'll remember, back in early November, the group, "Let Lubbock Vote" turned in a petition to prompt a vote on packaged alcohol sales.  About 19,000 signatures were needed to make the petition valid, and today we found out the petition succeeded with a total of more than 25-000 signatures.  The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce formed "Let Lubbock Vote" to head-up the petition process, and while they say they're glad it was a success, the chamber will not be supporting one side over the other as the issue comes to a vote in May.
Dorothy Kennedy with the County Elections office says the alcohol election will be held on May 9th, 2009.  If you want to be able to vote, you must be registered in Lubbock County by April 9th.  She says her staff is expecting a very large turn-out because it seems everyone has an opinion on this issue.
