Lubbock County will run its own medical examiners office now that Texas Tech Health Science Center says it will no longer be providing the service next year.

The County Commissioners Court approved Dr. Sridhar Natarajan to lead the office.

Natarajan was Lubbock's ME several years ago and his appointment is being supported by law enforcement and members of the medical community.

Lubbock County will have to take on the burden of $1.7 million to fund the office, but Judge Tom Head said the county is already looking into the situation.

Head said a budget amendment may need to take place early next year.
