The Better Business Bureau is warning folks of a scam known to rip consumers off of thousands of dollars.

It's called the 'Publishers Clearing House' scam and at least one Lubbock woman was a target.

Here's how it works:

Scam artists send out an official looking Publishers Clearing House letter and enclosed is a check.

That check looks real and usually has a businesses name falsely printed on the check.

In some cases, even the bank is fooled by the check, but it is bogus and you'll be the one stuck with unavoidable fees.

The Better Business Bureau says you should not cash the check under any circumstance.

Simply tear it up and throw it away.
