Lubbock County Commissioners issued a burn ban Monday for all of Lubbock County.
The ban is effective immediately and will not be lifted until further notice.
This comes in reaction to severe drought, high winds and dry brush accumulations that resulted in several grass fires in the region.
The ban prohibits all outdoor burning, with the exception of outdoor cooking in approved appliances like a grill.
"No outside burning, for example, trash barrels, trash pits, burning your lawn off, as some people do every year, that's no longer allowable until the Commissioners Court lifts the burn ban," says Tim Smith, President of Lubbock County Firefighters Association.
Illegal burning is a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to $500 in fines.
