A parvo outbreak in Lubbock has pet owners worried about the health of their pups. Animal Medical Center doctors usually treat only one dog a week for parvo. Last month they treated fifteen. The parvo virus is believed to be spread by flies and can lead to extreme dehydration in dogs and sometimes death. But the good news: parvo can be prevented.

"Vaccination is probably the best thing you can do. Like I said at six weeks- six, nine, twelve, fifteen and eighteen weeks- if you have one of the breeds that is more affected probably go all the way to twenty-two weeks," says Dr. Lane Preston with Animal Medical Center.

The breeds more suspectible to parvo are Rottweiler, Doberman, Pitbull and Dalmatian. Local vets advise you to make sure you're up to date on parvo vaccinations.
