Utility bills in Lubbock are on the rise, and Lubbock Power and Light has come up with its own way of helping low income customers make ends meet. LP&L is working to expand its Helping Hand program. Helping Hand is based solely on donations from customers willing to help low income families pay their electric bill. Right now you can only sign up to donate on their website or by phone, but they're looking into pledge forms and round up programs.

"If a customer had a $100.50 bill, we'd round it up to $101, take that extra bit of change, and apply it to project Helping Hand. And we think that could really generate a lot of money to help those in need pay their bill," says LP&L's Chris Sims.

Right now Helping Hand generates about $400 a month. LP&L asks customers to call Catholic Family Services if they need help paying their electric bill.
