Could library books be a danger to your kids?

A new law could end up taking thousands of books of the shelf because they might be harmful.

The Consumer Protection Act went into effect just a few weeks ago.

It set lead-testing requirements for toys and many other products that children might handle, including books.

Millions of toys have already been pulled from store shelves for having high levels of lead, but a decision on whether children's books should be tested for lead won't come for a year.

In the meantime, local librarians are warning parents of the potential danger.

"You don't want children to put the books in their mouth or anything else that they might come across, so I would just caution parents that children shouldn't put the books in their mouth," Lubbock Library Director, Jane Clausen says.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recommending children's books printed between 1950 and 1997 should be tested for lead.
