TAAS Accused of Misconduct

By: Kristen Kennedy
Updated: April 2, 2009
The Truth About Alcohol Sales, the pac who wants to keep alcohol out of Lubbock, is accused of misconduct. The TAAS group trains volunteers to call Lubbock homes and leave messages asking everyone to vote no against alcohol. In one recorded message, a volunteer encourages folks to say no to 'packaged liquor' being put in our drug stores and grocery stores. When in reality, only beer and wine can be sold in drug and grocery stores under Texas law. The volunteer's lie on tape is a Class B misdemeanor, but TAAS member Josh Allen says the woman did not stick to the TAAS approved script.

"It's a technicality. If they would have not used the word liquor and would have used the word alcohol, that would have been a true statement," says Allen.

"The lady on the phone represented herself form TAAS and was saying how do you feel about liquor being available to your children, being in your grocery stores and your drug stores," says Lubbock County Wins member Melissa Pierce.

The group supporting alcohol sales in Lubbock - Lubbock County Wins - just wants both sides to present folks with all the information they need to make an informed decision come May
