The Texas Cotton Ginners' Association today wrapped up its annual trade show at the Civic Center, and today Texas AgriLife Research made an announcement that could help change the future of cotton in West Texas.

Texas AgriLife, based at A&M, has just received the largest private donation of cotton technology from Monsanto -- one of the world's leading agriculture companies. Monsanto gave them 4,000 'molecular markers,' which help develop better plant varieties.

The donation will not only benefit cotton researchers and breeders, it will also help South Plains cotton farmers get more and better products out of every acre. Says John Purcell of Monsanto, "We're just really glad to be here and be able to provide this to the public sector to improve cotton varieties and help cotton growers be more productive."
