Strong wind gusts caused all sorts of problems for folks all across the south plains Thursday.

A wind advisory was in affect for much of the day and blowing dust was causing more than just visibility problems.

Dr. Chris Piel at University Medical Center says blowing dust can affect your health.

He advises people with respiratory illnesses, like asthma, to limit their outdoor exposure on days with high winds.

And just because you may not have asthma doesn't mean you should be outside either.

Dr. Piel says high winds often cause eye injuries and falls.

"If you have kids or you're with an older person, be careful.  Try to open the door for them.  Be cautious doing those kinds of activities because something real minor can turn into a fracture of the wrist or something like that," Dr. Piel says.
