According to officials from the Lubbock Professional Police Association, the shortage in viable recruits is due to uncompetitive wages.

Lubbock Police asked for a 15 percent raise in order to lure new recruits, but their request was denied by the City Council and Tom Martin.

LPD currently is short 60 officers and only saw a graduating class of seven cadets this past season.

More than 100 LPD officers are up for retirement in the next five years.

Police Association officials said that if something isn't done soon, there will not be enough police on the streets to deal with Lubbock's growing population and the crime that comes with it.
