Sharapova Advances To Third Round At Wimbledon

Wimbledon, England (Sports Network) - Former champion Maria Sharapova of Russia was an easy second-round winner Thursday at Wimbledon. The fourth-seeded Sharapova improved to 14-1 here over the last three years by belting American Ashley Harkleroad 6-2, 6-2 in 67 minutes on Court 2 at the famed All England Club. The 19-year-old Sharapova captured the title here in 2004 and reached the semis a year ago. Her third-round opponent this week will be 33-year-old American Amy Frazier. In other top-10 seed action, No. 9 Russian Anastasia Myskina mauled German Martina Muller 6-2, 6-1, while France`s Severine Bremond ousted No. 8 Swiss Patty Schnyder 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a match that was completed on Day 4 after being suspended on Wednesday. The 2004 French Open champion Myskina was last week`s Eastbourne runner-up to Justine Henin-Hardenne. Fifteenth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova held off American Jamea Jackson 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, while 16th-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta pummeled American Laura Granville 6-2, 6-1.
