At City Hall, about a dozen people showed up Thursday to speak out both for and against the new animal shelter's location. Right now, the city plans to build the shelter next to the main entrance of Mackenzie. Some Lubbockities told council members they were tired of hearing about new locations and just want the city to hurry up and build, but folks who live near Mackenzie are afraid a shelter would detract from the park.
"Whenever a part of a community that has been underserved or disinfranchised sees something coming their way after another part of town rejected it, they understandbly say hey is this something you're pawning off on us? I think we can show that that's not the issue," says Councilman Todd Klein.
Klein says they still believe Mackenzie Park is the best location, but they do want to address the neighborhood coalition's concerns.
