If you're planning an international vacation this summer, make sure you've got the right I.D. or you may not be able to re-enter the U.S.
Beginning June 1st, a federal law goes into effect requiring all U.S. citizens to have a passport to re-enter the U.S.
The law was introduced after the 2001 terrorist attacks, but was delayed several times.
There is an exception in the law, if you frequently travel back and forth to Mexico or Canada, you can get a passport card, but the cards are not accepted for air travel.
"There's a cost associated with a passport. It's one more document that a person has to go and purchase, but when you sit down and look at the pro's and con's of having that document leaving the country, even if you're just going into Canada or driving into Mexico, the benefits outweigh the costs of having that document," Ronnie Miller with American Express travel says.
If you need a passport, the easiest way to apply for one is through the State Department's website, that's www.state.gov.
