Dr. Karen Garza is the new superindentent of the Lubbock Independent School District.  She was hired in April and started on July 1, but because of the July 4th holiday, last week was her first full week on the job.

Garza says right now she's settling into her new district, but soon she hopes to have a budget approved that will make Lubbock a great place to teach as well as a great place to go to school.

I fully anticipate that there will be a salary increase for teachers that is much needed. I know the board has been very open about the goal of being more competitive with teachers' salaries, so i think it's going to be a significant influx of dollars into the salaries of teachers," Garza said.

The first day of school is August 24th.  Garza hopes to have that budget approved by August 27th.
