Recycling Fire Blazes On

Firefighters continue to battle the blaze that tore through the North Lubbock recycling center.
At least seven different fire departments responded to I-27 near the airport when the fire broke out Monday evening and they worked through the night to get it contained. Tuesday afternoon, officials said the blaze was under control but there are still flames in the center of the heap they cannot reach. This is not the first time a fire has taken over this site. And while firefighters fear it will again take weeks to put out...Other officials are working to get this place shut down for good.
"All we could do is work on the edges. We don't have anything, not even Lubbock has anything that could shoot across enough to get in the middle of that stuff and even if we do, the water supply is just not here.
"It is a situation that needs to be addressed...it's past due."
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is working to get a permanent injunction for the recycling center to have it closed down.
