Steroids Not Common in High School Athletes

For the first time, there is irrefutable evidence that today's Texas high scool athletes are overwhelmingly clean, free of the performance enhancing drug scandals that are engulfing pro sports these days.
The state of Texas spent $6 million last year to test more than 45,000 student athletes. Of the 45,193 tested, only 19 tested positive. That means that more than 99.5% of students showed no use of steroids.
That includes a grand total of zero here in Lubbock.
Lubbock ISD Athletic Director Melynn Hunt is confident that the results are accurate.
"We have not had a problem here in lubbock at any of our campuses with steroids," Hunt said.
She says part of the lack of positives here in Lubbock is the influence of teachers and coaches.
"We know that this can't be good for kids, and we certainly encourage our kids and our coaches encourage our kids to stay away from anything like that," she said.
So lubbock tested clean, but hunt says, that does not mean there is a change coming to the steroid testing program.
"At this point we've heard nothing from the uil as far as cutback in testing or what's going to happen this year, so we are just status quo," she said.
