County Commission Interviews Sheriff Candidates

Lubbock County commissioners today interviewed candidates to fill the Sheriff's vacancy.

This morning, commissioners accepted the resignation of now former Sheriff David Gutierrez.

From 1 pm to 6 tonight, commissioners are holding interviews with five potential replacements for Gutierrez.  Chief Deputy Kelly Rowe, Director of Animal Services Kevin Overstreet, Federal Marshall Ronnie O'Neal, Former Major Don Carter, and Head of Police for Lubbock-Cooper ISD, Jesse Pena, Jr. all went before the commissioners.

Overstreet said it was a job interview unlike any other.

Four TV cameras, and full of commissioners and then a room full of half--- or, you know, a room half full. I've certainly never had to interview like this before so it's a little different. It is, Overstreet said.

He also said he has no prediction as to whom the commissioners will appoint.

"You're guess is as good as mine on who they might appoint. They've got a choice between five different people and all of them are well-qualified," Overstreet said.

The County Commission will reconvene Tuesday at 10:30 AM to decide who to appoint.
