The city of Lubbock hosted a "Thank you" luncheon today for some soldiers who are headed overseas.  The luncheon was held at the Radisson Hotel for 35 medical personnel from the U-S Army.  They are preparing to deploy for a 14 month mission in Afghanistan where they will help train the Afghan Army in medicine and provide trauma aid.  Captain Martin Lopez said his men are well prepared, but their effort is more than medicine.

"The big impact that we're making is quiet, behind the scenes where we're trying to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people."

City council members Paul Beane and John Leonard also attended the luncheon.

If you're interested in helping the families of these soldiers you can donate to the family readiness program.  It provides group dinners and gift bags to the families of deployed soldiers.  Please call Specialist Megan McKinney at 806-781-7178.
