According to the Lubbock National Weather Serivce, the risk of having a car accident is greater this time of the year on the South Plains. The increase in serious multi-car accidents is due to sun glare caused by the equinox. That's when the sun rises and set directly in the East and West and is in perfect alignment with roads like the South Loop.
Meteorologist Jody Jones said, "The days are equal length and during that time also the sun rises directly in the East, so if you're heading at 90 degrees the sun will be right in your eyes."
He also added the best way to reduce sun glare is to increase your visibility which you can do in four ways: first, clean both the inside and outside of your windshield; second, always be sure to wear sunglasses; third, increase your following distance from the car in front of you; and finally, if you can't see, slow down.
