Many took to the Hub City streets this morning to raise awareness for breast cancer.  The fight against the disease is thousands strong, especially for the annual Susan G. Komen 'Race for the Cure'.  More than 8,000 people locally ran in the race out by the Civic Center this morning.  The race raised nearly $400,000 dollars in Lubbock alone, which will go towards cancer research and treatment.

"With 10,000 people here today, I think that sends a pretty good message that all of us out here would like to see this thing beat," said Lisa Huddleston, an annual runner who lost her mother to breast cancer six years ago.

To date the Komen Lubbock affiliate has raised over $3,000,000 and sent nearly $2,000,000 to the local community.

And today's Tech game was packed today...with pink!  The Jones was a sea of pink hats, pink blankets and thousands of pink t-shirts.

Sponsored by Covenant Health System, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Texas Tech, today's 'Pack the Jones in Pink' was a success.  It only took one hour for all 15,000 free pink t-shirts to be given out.  And the "Think Pink, Go Red" t-shirts are all in honor of breast cancer awareness month.  For many who have lost loved ones to breast cancer, the event brings hope that one day there will be a cure.

"It's really encouraging to know that all these people are very supportive of the cause and are aware of what's happening because before not very many people knew all the statistics and stuff, but now because of all the awareness people are knowing and it's really nice," said Ann Simmons, who lost her mother to cancer when she was six years old.

The organizers of the event added that hopefully with more events like this and more awareness of breast cancer, they'll save more lives from the disease.
