About six thousand people came to the United Spirit Arena to listen to former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as she spoke at the lecture series named in her honor.
O'Connor is a West Texas woman herself.
She grew up on a ranch in El Paso.
Today she returned to the area to share her life experiences and wisdom with Tech law students and thousands of others.
"She's such a important historic figure and such a nice person, a bright attorney and judge. It's easy to get caught up in doing something in her name," said law school dean, Walter Huffman.
The Sandra Day O'Connor lecture series is a way to bring national attention to Tech's School of Law and inspiration to the residents of West Texas.
"The only job she was offered was one with no pay and no desk and she worked her way into being a justice of the United States Supreme Court, the first woman ever," said Huffman.
"She epitomizes the American dream. If you're willing to work hard, you can accomplish almost anything."
