Early voting continues for the November 3rd election. There are local and state items to consider, but there's one proposition area business leaders seem to really be pushing for.
We've been talking a lot lately about Tier One Status. It's already passed the Senate and the House, but now it's up to Texas voters to get it passed in the state and get Texas Tech the major funding that comes with Proposition Four.
Achieving Tier One Status basically means it will establish the National Research University Fund, providing funding for infrastructure, faculty, and educational opportunities. Tech and six other state universities are to be included in that fund.
Today, the Chamber of Commerce, along with area leaders, came together to push Lubbock voters to get to the polls and make sure Prop Four is passed. They say it not only helps Texas Tech, but all of West Texas, and puts millions of dollars right into our local economy.
Randy Jordan, LBK Chamber of Commerce: "Economists estimate that for every $10-million dollars that is spent in research expenditures, it creates 334 new jobs. Adds $8.6-million to the regional economy where the university is located, and generates $13.5-million in total sales."
Rep. Delwin Jones, TX House of Representatives: "Texas Tech is an economic backbone for this entire area. When you do a booster shot like this for Texas Tech, you're doing a booster shot for the entire area."
