History-making projects are underway in Andrews County.

Waste Control Specialists is heading the largest environmental cleanup in the U.S., but that's not all.

Nearly 180 employees work at WCS and their work is much needed, as the company's workload has seen a dramatic increase this year.

The company treats, stores and disposes of radioactive and hazardous waste materials out of their nearly 1,400 acre facility near Andrews.

Two major projects are underway at that facility right now.

WCS is disposing nearly 4,000 canisters containing waste from the production of uranium used by the U.S. during World War 2 to make atomic weapons.

The company is also overseeing the largest environmental cleanup in the country, by disposing of sediment containing PCB's dredged from the Hudson River in New York.

With other opportunities on the horizon, WCS President, Rod Baltzer, tells us the future looks bright.

"We've got a lot of potential, a lot of possibilities. We can be a national treasure, as someone once put it to me and I think there's need for it. There's finally a place for it and a community that supports it. Things are finally lining up and this looks to be a very good place for the future," Baltzer says.

A low level radioactive disposal site is set to begin construction in January 2010 at the Andrews facility.
