As details in the Fort Hood massacre continue to unfold, local veterans are following the situation closely here at home.

Nick Ervin now works for Texas Tech, but was based at Fort Hood, while serving two tours in Iraq.

Since 9/11, he says security has tightened at the base, even for men and women in the military.

He tells us he's surprised the shooter was able to get a weapon on the base and even more so, in to the building where the shootings took place.

"Really no part (of that area) of the post, you would have a weapon. There's no training going on there, so really, the likelihood of anyone even having a weapon, other than the security personnel, no one would even have a weapon there anyway," Ervin says.

He says the Soldier Readiness Center, the building where the shootings took place, was used for processing paperwork before deployments and issuing military I.D. cards.
