Sadly, the holiday season always means an increase in women seeking help for domestic violence and the folks at Women's Protective Services are concerned there are even more victims who aren't coming forward. "At any moment a person is at risk of death if they're experiencing domestic violence. I think people have this idea, especially around the holidays, that they can't get away from an abusive spouse because they don't have support or money is tight, but you have a great resource in WPS. We offer all our services, including residential services, for free."
Roy Rios with WPS says the holidays are the worst time of the year for many victims because couples are dealing with added stress. People are trying to come up with enough money to buy gifts and parties and celebrations lead to more drinking, which can end in arguments and battering. Rios says he worries some women stay in abusive relationships through the holidays for the kids and other factors, but he wants to urge them to get out before it's too late. Rios says,
Now if you are in an abusive relationship and want out or if you know someone else who needs help this holiday season all you have to do is call WPS at 747-6491 or toll free at 1-800-736-6491. They are open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year and they offer free emergency transportation.
