Tech Beats St. John`s In The Bottom of the Ninth

It was an unusual way to win a game, but the Tech baseball team will take it. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Tech`s James Leverton was hit by a pitch, bringing pinch runner David Groener home and giving the Red Raiders a 5-4 win over St. John`s. It was the first time that Tech had taken to the diamond since Tuesday`s win against New Mexico. Cold weather postponed Friday and Saturday`s game against St. John`s. Tech took an initial 2-0 lead in the first, thanks to an RBI sacrifice by Matt Smith and an RBI double by Roger Kieschnick. An RBI single by Smith in the third gave Tech a 3-0 lead. St. John`s would push three runs across the plate to tie the game in the fourth, and then took the lead in the fifth. In the ninth, hits by Tyler Reeves and Kieschnick and a walk loaded the bases, when Leverton was hit by a pitch. Randy Gattis (2-0) earned the win for Tech. Tech (5-3) plays Eastern New Mexico on Monday.
