The new year has finally begun....and the new jail isn't too far off from completion.

The new Lubbock County jail, a $96 million dollar project, is scheduled to be near completion this fall...and up and running by April of 2009.

Kelly Rowe at the Lubbock County Sheriff's office says the current jail has repeatedly had overcrowding issues.  So we pay 7 other counties nearly $3 million dollars to house our extra inmates.

"Just the operation of this facility based on it's design is just so much more efficient and so much better for the staff...but safe for not only the staff but the inmates as well."

The new jail will have more than 1500 beds....as opposed to the current jail which was only built to accommodate 600 beds.
