Investigators confirm the recent fire at the Waterford Apartment Complex is a case of carson. 37 year-old Bonnie Gonzalez and her 19 year-old daughter Kayla are in the Lubbock County jail after they confessed to setting their apartment on fire the night of January 12th. Officials said Bonnie Gonzalez was a victim of domestic violence and had been living off public assistance money, but that cash started to run out and authorities believe they made the terrible decision to set the fire out of desperation.
"They both seemed quite upset about the whole situation," said Bob Bailey, assistant Fire Marshal. "The public assistance that they had received in the past was about to run out and they had been wanting to get more of that assistance. They decided this was the way to get it."
Bonnie and Kayla Gonzalez have been charged with first degree felony arson and if convicted, each could face between five to 99 years in prison.
