State District Judge Brad Underwood sentenced a confessed killer to life in prison Tuesday.
The life sentence comes just one day after 56-year-old Jessie Herrera plead guilty to murdering his ex-girlfriend back in 2006.
Herrera admitted to stabbing Refugia Montes in the 600 block of North Flint.
The state called thirteen witnesses to the stand during the sentencing phase of the trial.
Many of those witnesses were Montes' family members, who told us they're satisfied with the sentence.
"This kind of closes everything for us and it kind of helps us, so we're glad it's over and done with. We hope he never comes out, except laying down," Montes' brother, Tommy Avalos says.
Herrera has thirty days to appeal his life sentence.
His attorney says it's still unclear whether his client will do so.
