Shooting Victim Survives to Tell His Story

A Lubbock man was shot by another man late Friday night in the parking lot of Wal-Mart near the intersection of 4th and Frankford in Northwest Lubbock.Devon Napper, the victim, says the incident actually began in at a Taco Bell drive thru adjacent to the Wal-Mart. That's where he says he was waiting in line for his food when his truck was rear-ended by the silver Honda Accord in line behind him.
Napper says it was just a tap, but when he got out to speak to the other driver, the man sped away and into the Wal-Mart parking lot. Napper followed.
He tried to speak to the driver, tapping on the window to get the man's attention. The other driver rolled down the window and, according to Napper, told him, "Mind your f---ing business." The driver, who was accompanied by a woman wearing a Hooters shirt, then rolled the window back up.
When Napper tapped again, the man again lowered his window. But this time, he had a gun in his hand, and he began firing.
Devon Napper says the man, a darkly complected man of possibly Indian or Hispanic descent, fired 10-12 times. When Napper saw the gun, he began running, so most of the shots riddled his back.
He was hit at least four times, and he bears the scars to prove it.
Napper says he didn't know what to do.
"It didn't hurt that bad when it actually happened, so I didn't think I was hurt, I didn't think they were too bad. But once I kind of started getting dizzy, it kind of all settled in, everything starts going through your head," Napper says.
He also says it's tough to believe that something so insignificant nearly ended his life.
"I can't believe he tried to kill me over something that... small."
Lubbock Police are still looking for the suspect. Crimeline is offering its usual reward, and Devon Napper's family is also offering its own reward. They'll pay $5,000 to the person that leads the way to the apprehension of the shooter.
