Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced the state is filing suit against a medical company in Levelland.  Abbot says Select Medical in Levelland improperly disposed of patient records.

The Levelland Police Department found stacks of forms containing patient's personal information, including social security numbers, in a dumpster behind the facility.  Officers found documents from more than 1,000 people in the area.  The state is trying to make sure this company never discloses personal information like this again.  The state is seeking up to $50,000 dollars per violation.

"A lot of people think a lot of identity theft is something that takes place over the internet and on computers.  That's true.  However, the reality is most identity theft still takes place the good old fashioned way, which is based upon hard documents,” says Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.

Select Medical operates all over the country.  This lawsuit involves the corporation, as well as the Levelland location.

If you think you may be a victim of the case against Select Medical, or another identity theft case here in Texas, you should call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division.  That number is 747-5238.
