Texas Tech has cleared track coach Wes Kitley of the allegations of paying an athlete.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the university conducted an internal review and found no violation of NCAA rules that were reported in a Fort Worth Star-Telegram article.
The article alleged Kittley provided over $4,000 to pay rent for student athlete Terry Beard a year ago.
During the internal investigation, Beard consistently denied he received inappropriate monetary assistance from Kittley, and denied making such allegations to a Star-Telegram reporter.
University records show that approximately $4,200 paid to the student athlete came from a Pell Grant, student loans and an NCAA permissible special assistance fund. These findings have been sent to the NCAA.
Tech Athletic Director Gerald Myers released a statement Tuesday afternoon as well, giving a strong vote of confidence for Kittley.
The Tech track team will attempt to defend its Big XII Track & Field Championship this weekend in Waco.
