Woods Wins PGA; O`Hair Best Major Finish

Medinah, IL (Sports Network) - Tiger Woods collected his 12th professional major championship on Sunday as he won his third PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club. Woods moved to second on the all-time majors list as he jumped past Walter Hagen. Woods is now six shy of Jack Nicklaus` record of 18 professional majors and Woods moved closer to winning the career Grand Slam for a third time. He needs one more U.S. Open victory to accomplish that feat. Woods, 30, also picked up his 12th major almost three years earlier than Nicklaus was able to win his 12th at the 1973 PGA Championship. The win was Woods` 51st on the PGA Tour and his second major of the 2006 campaign. After he missed his first cut in a major as a professional at the U.S. Open, Woods hoisted the claret jug at Royal Liverpool in July and now collected his first Wanamaker Trophy since his second in a row in 2000. Woods, who is now a perfect 12-for-12 when at least sharing the 54-hole lead in a major, fired a final-round, four-under 68 to finish the event at 18- under-par 270. That matched his own PGA Championship record for lowest score in relation to par, which he originally set in 2000 along with Bob May. Former Coronado Mustang, Sean O`Hair shot an 8-under par and finished tied for 12th place, it`s the Lubbock native`s best finish in a major tournament. Shaun Micheel, the 2003 PGA Champion, shot a three-under 69 and finished second at 13-under-par 275. Luke Donald, who shared the overnight lead with Woods, became the latest final-round victim in a major championship. He struggled to a two-over 74 and tied for third place with Adam Scott (67) and Sergio Garcia (70) at 12-under- par 276. Mike Weir carded a one-over 73 and finished alone in sixth place at minus-11. K.J. Choi (71) and Steve Stricker (69) shared seventh at 10-under-par 278, while reigning U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy (74), Ian Poulter (71) and Ryan Moore (69) tied for ninth place at minus-nine. Reigning Masters winner and 2005 PGA champion Phil Mickelson played poorly on Sunday. He shot a two-over 74 and was part of a group tied for 16th place at six-under-par 282.
