Hispanic Vote in the Texas Primary Election

Some say the Hispanic vote during the Texas Primary Election may play a big role in determining the democratic presidential candidate.

Studies show about 20% of registered voters in Texas have Hispanic surnames and there are about 3.6 million Hispanic voters in the state.  Prior to the Texas Primary, a Gallup Poll of eligible Hispanic voters throughout the U.S. showed Senator Barack Obama leading senator Hillary Clinton by only 4 percentage points.

In Lubbock, groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens have been rallying Latino voters.  They say it’s a crucial election for our presidential candidates and local positions as well; for example, the race for County Commissioner.

"Well, we're really grateful for the support we've received from the Latino community.  It's been wonderful.  It really helped us in California.  And we really think it will be a critical test today,” says Jamie Radice, a Texas Press Secretary for Hillary Clinton.

"Well, I think that they've really been paying attention to what the Latino voters want.  I think that they realize that education, healthcare, immigration issues, are all important; especially for the presidential candidates.  So, I believe that they've definitely listened and I think that has caused them to pay more attention to our community,” says Alice Lozada of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
