Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - James Anderson scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Oklahoma State edged Texas Tech, 76-72, in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament.
The matchup featured the sons of two coaching legends, as Sean Sutton's Cowboys scored a hard-fought win over Pat Knight's Red Raiders.
Byron Eaton and Terrel Harris each scored 12 points for the Cowboys (17-14) who advance to play top-seeded Texas in Friday's quarterfinals. Martavius Adams added 10 points for Oklahoma State, which stemmed a two-game slide, and set up a rematch with the No. 6 Longhorns, who handed the Cowboys two tough losses this season.
Texas edged Oklahoma State, 63-61, on January 19, and completed the regular season with a 62-57 win on March 9.
Alan Voskuil scored 19 points for Texas Tech (16-15), which has lost three straight. Trevor Cook scored 16 points, and Charlie Burgess and Mike Singletary each contributed 14 points for the Red Raiders, who squandered several chances to go on top late in regulation.
The game was neck-and-neck from the opening tip to the final horn. Obi Muonelo's layup put Oklahoma State up 69-67 with 3:28 left. Cook and Burgess each had trips to the charity stripe, but Cook made one-of-two while Burgess missed both.
Eaton and Texas Tech's Martin Zeno traded baskets, but Eaton drained a jumper to put the Cowboys ahead 73-70 with 46.7 seconds left. Burgess missed a layup, giving Eaton a chance to ice the game at the line. He missed the second free throw, though, and Burgess' layup with 21.9 left made it 74-72.
Eaton was immediately fouled, and missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Texas Tech rushed the ball up the court, and Burgess turned the ball over, falling down as he wildly drove the lane.
Anderson collected the steal, was fouled, and sank both free throws with 4.8 seconds left to seal the win.
Oklahoma State led 36-32 at the intermission.
