LAS VEGAS, Nev.UNLV built a 10-2 lead, that included a seven-run second inning, and survived a late Texas Tech rally to post a 15-8 win over the Red Raiders on Wednesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.  The win completes a two-game sweep by the Rebels as the notched a 9-8 win over Tech last night.

The loss pushes Tech’s losing streak to six games as the Red Raiders now stand at 17-21 on the season.  The win moves UNLV to 16-19.  The game was called after the top of the eighth due to Texas Tech’s travel plans back to Lubbock.

Texas Tech’s early inning woes continued this time in the second frame as the Rebels grabbed a 7-0 lead off of six hits and two walks.  Bryan Resnick got the Rebels going with a bases loaded, two-RBI double to left field.  J.J Sferra and Michael Brenley each added two-RBI singles and Rance Roundy drove in the final run with a single to left.

Sophomore third baseman Joey Kenworthy put the Red Raiders on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when he belted a two-run home run over the right field wall to pull Tech within five at 7-2.  Willie Rueda set up the home run with a two-out single, his second hit of the game.  The home run by Kenworthy was his second of the season.

UNLV put the game out of reach for the Red Raiders with a three run outburst in the bottom of the fifth.  Two of the three runs scored by the Rebels went down as unearned after a fielding error by Tech shortstop Chris Hall prolonged the inning.  The two runs would prove to be costly as Tech would make a run in the next two innings.

Roger Kieschnick led off the top of the sixth inning with a triple to the gap in left center and then scored on an RBI single by Chris Richburg.  Hall then drove in the second run with a bases loaded single to right and Rueda plated the final run on an RBI groundout.  The three runs by Tech pulled the Red Raiders within five at 10-5.

In the top of the seventh, senior first baseman Jason Seefeld brought the Red Raiders within striking distance with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh.  Leadoff batter Doug Thennis reached on a fielding error by UNLV shortstop Jarred Frierson and then Kieschnick moved him to third with a double down the right field line.  Kieschnick’s double set up the home run opportunity for Seefeld who connected on his fifth of the season and made the score 10-8 in favor of UNLV.

The Rebels put to rest any hopes of a Tech comeback in the bottom of the seventh as they pounded out five runs to take a 15-8 lead.  Braden Walker hit a three-run home run in the inning to lead the way for UNLV.

Marc Baca (1-1) picked up his first win of the season as he held Tech to four runs on seven hits over five innings of work.  Cory Large (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs on four hits over 1 1/3 innings of work.

Texas Tech returns to Big 12 Conference play this weekend at Dan Law Field as the Red Raiders host the Kansas State Wildcats in a three-game series.  First pitch on Friday night is set for 6:05 p.m.
