Hearings began in what could be the largest child custody case in United States history.

Depending on how the hearing goes, Lubbock might become home to some of the 416 children.

Lubbock Children's Home can take care of up to fourteen children if need be.

"Because they've been raised in an isolated situation, we know they are going to bring some unique characteristics to address," said Lynn Harms, of the Children's Home.

Judge Barbara Wather in San Angelo has the most daunting task of all.

She'll decide which of the children, if any, will stay with their biological parents.

Lubbock attorney, Bill McNamara, says this is the most convoluted custody case he's ever heard of, and the hundred or so attorneys have their work cut out for them.

"I don't know how these people have gotten away with this type of arrangement to begin with," said McNamara.

"Why didn't the district attorney stop it before they even had children?"
