"In this day and age anything can happen to anyone," said Angelique Liles, an instructor at Premiere Martial Arts.

Co-owners, John and Angelique Liles say many people come to them to learn self defense.

"The biggest key is awareness of your situation and your surroundings. That's the first thing we teach people. Then after that we teach people how to deal with the attacker if the attacker pursues," said Mr. Liles.

They also make sure kids know what to do if a stranger approaches.

"The first thing they do is start with a verbal warning. We teach them a safe distance between the attacker and themselves, and if the attacker comes into that distance they take a step back and put up their hands and and say 'stop!' or 'back off!' If the the attacker comes closer we teach them a kick then they start screaming and running and try to get help from that point," said Mr. Liles.

Ms. Liles encourages everyone to always pay attention to that gut feeling.
