LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 13 Texas A&M used a five-run second inning to
defeat Texas Tech 7-4 on Friday evening in front of 2,252 fans at Dan
Law Field.
Texas Tech (20-13; 4-6 Big 12) and Texas A&M (27-6; 6-4 Big 12) will
play the final two games of this series in the form of Friday afternoon
doubleheader due to forecasted inclement weather in the area on
Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and game two will follow
approximately 45 minutes later.
Texas A&M took advantage of a rocky second inning by Tech starter Travis
Young who was making his first career start for the Red Raiders. Young
gave up five runs on five hits in the frame, including a bases clearing
double by Ben Feltner.
The Tech offense struck back in the bottom half of the fourth inning as
the Red Raiders pulled within one with a four-run outburst. Freshman
left fielder Taylor Ashby delivered the biggest hit of the inning when
he laced a two-run triple to the gap in right-center.
The Aggies squashed any hope of a Tech comeback with two runs in the top
of the eighth. A&M chased away Travis Young after he loaded the bases
on a leadoff hit, a walk and a hit batter. Brodie Green and Parker
Dalton drove in the runs with a RBI single and a sacrifice fly,
respectively.
Young (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up all
seven runs on 10 hits while striking out five. David Newmann (5-1)
picked up his fifth win of the season for the Aggies as he logged five
innings allowing four runs on seven hits and struckout two.
